This is his post from his site…
I went shopping at the grocery store recently. I was standing near the home office supplies when a woman approached to my left.
She paused for a second and then awkwardly leaning toward me said, “What are you wearing?”
I, believing she must be talking to her friend on the other side of me, ignored the comment until she repeated it with some added intensity. At first perplexed, I almost made a stupid comment about my clothing -pants, shirt, shoes. But, there didn’t seem to be anything to comment on. Suddenly I was embarrassed as I realized she was talking about how I smell.
Before I could answer she said, ” I love the scents new men’s colognes are coming out with now. What is it?”
I laughed and told her, “I have essential oils on” I didn’t have the nerve to tell her it was my homemade deodorant and all that sweet sweet sweet smell was coming from my arm pits.
She then leaned in to get an even better smell, my discomfort slowly turning to amusement.
“What is it… what is it… what do I smell? Jasmine?”
“No…”
“Sandalwood?”
“No…”, I said with a smile.
“Patchouli!”
“That’s one of them, my wife likes me to wear it – it makes me a little less ADD“, I told her.
After including her friend in the “Matt’s aroma” sampling event, we concluded our memorable conversation and I went home and embellished the story to my wife. Of course, insinuating that my good looks had as much to do with the encounter as doTERRA essential oils.
It reminded me that I need to update an article I wrote last year on essential oils, breast cancer, and deodorant.
First, I have experimented with diluting the deodorant essential oils recipe in fractionated coconut oil, witch hazel, and alcohol. All the above are legitimate agents that you can use, and if you find the oils to remain effective they are good options. I however, did not like any of them for different reasons. I found the oils much more effective as a deodorant if applied “neat” to the underarm. For reasons explained in my other article, don’t wish to inhibit sweating so I don’t want to mix them with anything that would substitute for an antiperspirant either.
Second, I have been concerned about cost. Which is of course why I was looking into dilution. I found what I believe to be a better solution.
LEMON! Yep… Lemon is cheap -and very very effective.
I also needed a solution that did not involve Clary Sage, as well. I love Clary Sage, but I did not like having to caution a pregnant woman against using my deodorant. Especially when I feel strongly that this approach can be an aid in preventing breast cancer.
So here is my new recipe:
Take a 10 ml roll-on -empty.
Add 5 ml of lemon (1/2 the empty roll-on bottle)
Add 20 drops grapefruit
Add 20 drops Purify Blend
Add 20 drops Lavender
Add 15 drops Patchouli
Add 10 drops Frankincense
Thanks to the lemon, the overall cost is only about $10 to $12. I was paying $10 for Burts Bees deodorant which was mostly alcohol and low-grade essential oils. Plus you get the health benefits of having daily frankincense exposure, the detoxing capabilities of Purify, odor producing bacteria killing effects of the lemon, the cellulite reducing effects of grapefruit, and the grounding effect of Patchouli!
It is important to realize, that although you can play with this mixture, you will need to have a heavy or low tone oil like Patchouli, Sandalwood, Myrrh, or Vetiver if you want the deodorant to be effective all day. The heavy oils dramatically lengthen the time it is active on your skin.
Also, if the blend feels too strong for your skin, reduce the Purify and Grapefruit by 5 drops each and increase the Lavender by 10 drops.
Have fun! …and next time you are in the store and a stranger can’t help but sample your aroma you will know why. They are probably ADD and want your Patchouli.
